Went to the Chica graduation this Sunday, a leadership development program for high-school age Latinas founded and led by Nurys Camargo. It is wonderful to see this work going on. It is so important that young Latinas have role models who are people who look like them and can understand who they are and where they come from. Nurys took this young women (in high school) all across the state to meet others like them and meet adults who can be their role models. The event itself was so well organized: on time, good food, and a good talk by Carmen Ortiz, a Latina who is now the US Attorney for Massachusetts, who spoke about her own origins in Spanish Harlem and provided some clear advice to the young women.
